The Trojan War originally started with the Greek gods. It's said that three Greek goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite each reached for a golden apple at a wedding. They wanted Zeus to decide who should have the apple, but he wouldn't becaue he didn't want the other two goddesses to scold him. He then decided to have Paris the king of Troy decide which goddess to have the apple. Each lady offered him something different; Hera bribed him with power, Athena promised him wealth, and Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris chose Aphrodite and as promised, Helen became his. Helen was married to Menelaus, king of Sparta. When he found out that his wife had been taken to Troy, he was obviously angry and wanted to seek revenge on Troy. He called upon Achilles to help him fight. Achilles wouldn't fight under King Menelaus, but would have his own men and ships and fight to gain Troy. It's said that there were 1,000 ships that washed up on the shores of Troy and the war began.
